This section of Midtown was informally christened by a former resident of the area, who, attending a neighborhood meeting, introduced himself as “Tom from the Woods–you know, Atwood, Lockwood, Parkwood.” The tongue-in-cheek appellation struck everyone, and the name stuck. (Hawthorne Street fits the pattern in a different way, being the name of a tree.)

The Woods encompasses addresses on all the aforementioned streets, as well as the 0 and 100 blocks of Grand Avenue and the north sides of the 600 and 700 blocks of Fulton Street.Several current and former Midtown board members live in this part of the neighborhood, where housing styles are similar to, though more modest than, our neighbors to the west in Heritage Hill.

One of the oldest houses in the Woods is located at the corner of Atwood and Eastern (once Mechanic Street), a former farmhouse which has been carefully restored over the years by the current long-time owners and which gives a lovely view onto the East Fulton Cemetery. While quite a few houses in the area have been converted to two-family use and are let out as rental units, most are still owner-occupied single-family dwellings. Many homeowners who currently reside here are former renters of units located on the same block; this is a neighborhood which captures and keeps it’s residents. It’s a friendly place full of folks willing to lend a hand and to open their homes and hearts to all their neighbors, old and new.
